Saraab Episode-8 Review: Asfand takes Hooriya to a psychiatrist

HUM TV's drama series Saraab is based on mental health awareness, the play's protagonist Hooriya is portrayed as an advanced-stage schizophrenic patient whose own family is highly ignorant and unsupportive. His mental illness is often mistaken for the influence of magic and instead of treating him, his family brings him to Peer and Dargah, only Hooriya's cousin Asfand knows his problem and is trying to help him. Sonya Hassyn's performance is outstanding in this episode.

There is a creepy scene on the road where Hooriya and Asfand have a little argument. Hooriya insists that it is he who always lives with her and talks to her and even points in the direction in which he sees another that he is standing there. Asfand is really scared by Hooriya's confession, but now he's absolutely certain that Hooriya must be having some serious mental problem.

It is only Asfand who understands Hooriya's problem and really wants to help him unlike his own family who don't even consider that Hooriya might have any mental problems. Despite Hooriya's insistence on going home, he takes her to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist tells Asfand that she suffers from advanced stage schizophrenia and that her home environment is not at all suitable for her. She further suggests that she be admitted to the hospital.

Hooriya is unwilling to accept that she has some kind of mental illness. She denies everything Asfand tells her. She insists that she wants to go home. Asfand takes her back home, but there her creepy strange sisters scream like hell and start cursing her. On the other hand, Hooriya's father begins to beat Asfand without even giving her a chance to tell her her version of events. Asfand also faces fierce treatment from her own father.

Asfand tells his mother that he has taken Hooriya to a psychiatrist for treatment and that she has also prescribed him some medications that he wants to give to his family, but that no one is willing to listen to him. Asfand's mother says that she will go and try to tell her brother about Hooriya's condition. On the other hand, Hooriya's father is determined that he will never marry her to Asfand no matter what. Hooriya's sisters are too pathetic and noisy, they are continually cursing Hooriya and have locked her in a room. Well, it is true that the family environment and their behavior is responsible for worsening the mental illness condition and here, in Hooriya's case, there seems to be no hope.
